Kareena Anderson
Kareena Anderson is an Environmental Scientist with over 8 years working experience in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, her native country. For as long as she can remember, she has had a passion for animals and the natural environment which was fostered by long walks in the forests with her father and grandfather from an early age. She holds an M.Sc. Biodiversity Conservation & Sustainable Development in the Caribbean (with distinction) and a B.Sc. Zoology and Botany (First Class Honours) from the University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine. She has previous work experience in the areas of environmental management and monitoring, ecology, wildlife conservation, health and safety and emergency response planning. Her former employers include Coastal Dynamics Ltd., Petrotrin, Ecoengineering Consultants Ltd., the Manatee Conservation Trust and the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago.
A significant part of Kareena’s life has been spent in the pursuit of understanding the dynamics of the interactions between humans and the natural world. Indeed, her working experience has given her a unique insight into the sometimes conflicting roles of the environmentalist and the environmental professional as well as an appreciation of varying stakeholder views with respect to the management of natural resources. Her belief that scientific research is vital to conservation efforts in Trinidad led to her conducting a “Mist Netting Survey of Overwintering Migrant Songbirds in the Caroni Swamp, Trinidad” for her master’s thesis. This study was part of the wider Caroni Swamp RDI Project of UWI, St Augustine.
Kareena’s other interests include hiking, bird watching, capture and release mist-netting of birds and bats and the rehabilitation of abandoned animals. She is currently a Health, Safety and Environment Officer with Design Engineering Services Limited and a Consultant Environmental Scientist. In her leisure time, she is also a Field Assistant with the Baseline Biological Survey of the Aripo Savannas (Green Fund Project) currently being conducted by UWI, St Augustine. Her future goals include having a more active role in research to further the causes of environmental preservation and wildlife conservation in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
