Mariana Gnecco
Mariana Gnecco is from the Colombian Caribbean archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina. From a very early age, her love of nature drove her to have a close relationship with the coastal and marine ecosystems of her beloved island. She currently works as the environmental education coordinator at the Botanical Garden of the National University of Colombia, Caribbean Campus.
During her Biology training in Los Andes University, she gained field and laboratory experience in several topics, such as reef monitoring and population genetics. She also participated as a researcher in two of the Seaflower scientific expeditions to the northern keys of the Archipelago, which aimed to estimate the state of populations of marine and terrestrial species. This experience as well as her volunteer time in whale monitoring in Ecuador and leading anti-plastic campaigns in the service club she’s a member of, have enhanced her motivation to become a conservation leader.
She’s very honored to be a part of the CLiC program and is certain that it will provide her with incredibly useful skills and knowledge to participate and/or initiate projects in her island, specially related with her main passion: coral reef conservation.
