Kate Charles
Born in Scotland, Kate Charles is an Applied Marine Biology graduate with a passion for all things marine with a focus on sea turtles. First arriving in Grenada in 2010 as a volunteer she has progressed over the last seven years to being the Project Manager of a Grenadian non-profit NGO, called Ocean Spirits focused on sea turtle research, education and conservation.
Based in the rural north of Grenada, Kate can be found on the index leatherback sea turtle nesting beach busy collecting nesting data, saturation tagging and through her team’s presence keeping poachers away from the nests. With over 1000 nests a year it is no easy task.
Kate is the WIDECAST country coordinator for Grenada and Project Lead for a UNDP-ICCAS funded project creating Climate Change resilience in Grenada’s only Ramsar site. Creating a baseline study of all the flora and fauna in the Ramsar area, Kate has been collecting data on birds, reptiles, water quality and beach profiling whilst creating public awareness through community days and educational materials.
Kate is incredibly excited at the opportunity to meet like-minded persons throughout the Caribbean and learn new skills and knowledge from a variety of experts.
