Sharleen Khan
Sharleen was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago and been passionate about animals since her childhood. For as long as she can recall, she knew that her career path would be centered on wildlife conservation. In a natural progression, she is the holder of a double major B.Sc. Degree in Environmental and Natural Resources Management and Agricultural Science from the University of the West Indies.
In 2008, Sharleen held the position of Environmental Education Officer at a local nature reserve. Today, she is the Zoological Officer with the Zoological Society of Trinidad and Tobago Inc. at the Emperor Valley Zoo, Trinidad where she is involved in caring for and training of Bengal tigers and giraffes, coordinating the Zoo’s Education and Outreach Programmes, rehabilitating injured wildlife and assisting with the breeding and reintroduction of endangered species into the wild.
With 7 years hands on experience working with and promoting wildlife conservation, Sharleen has had the opportunity to undergo several training attachments at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, Florida, Smithsonian National Zoo, Washington, Guyana Zoo, National Aquarium, Baltimore and Australia Zoo. she also participated in several animal training exercises at the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Annual Conference 2013 and 2014 hosted by Kansas City Zoo, Missouri and Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Sea World respectively.
In addition to her academic background and work experience, Sharleen is a member of the Manatee Conservation Trust, an Honorary Game Warden of Trinidad and Tobago and a Rotarian. She is currently pursuing studies in zoo animal husbandry with the San Diego Zoo Global Programme and plans to further her career by continued work with the endangered Bengal tiger.
