Leon Radix
Leon Radix was born in the rural village of Vincennes in the parish of St. David’s, Grenada and is a holder of a Master’s in Environmental Policy and Management and a Bachelor’s in Life Sciences. He has worked in the education sector for seventeen years-starting off a primary school teacher, then a secondary school teacher and at present, is an instructor in the Department of Biology, Ecology and Conservation at the St. George’s University, Grenada.
As an undergraduate student, Leon was fortunate to be one of the founding members of the St. George’s University Environmental Club, ECO. As a member of this club he was a part of several school visits to create greater awareness of the importance of coastal ecosystems in Grenada. Today ECO is a vibrant conservation body and has partnered with several NGOs in Grenada to conserve Grenada’s wildlife and their associated habitats.
Leon has always been eager to volunteer on projects related to conservation both in and out of Grenada. At present he is actively involved in the Grenada Marine Protected Area Committee, Ocean Spirits and Grenada Youth Entrepreneurs Project Glass Bottle Upcycling. He is also involved in the community as a member of the St. David’s Cricket Committee and St. David’s United Football Team.
Leon is passionate about butterflies and hopes to create a butterfly garden for research and ecotourism in the future. He believes that conservation of a country’s biodiversity is critical to its sustainable development. However, conservation should not be forced upon people but should be inculcated.
